Picture yourself emerging
in January with a stronger, more supple low back, tighter abdominals, and
improved muscle tone in your thighs, hips, shoulders, and the back of your arms.
Imagine having your own yoga sanctuary, one you can retreat to in the comfort of
your own home, to help combat holiday and winter stress and boost your energy
levels. What's amazing is that of the above is potentially achievable with
a yoga tradition known as the Sun Salutation!
Let's explore this ancient technique further....

the log cabin at Schaumburg's Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary. Happily,
additional outings are scheduled for fall--what a great way to celebrate the
coming autumnal tints! But what's especially exciting is that we're hoping
to make these yoga classes a weekly occurrence.

We're thrilled at the
success of our summer
outdoor "Yoga in Nature" workshops. These outings, which already have
fall dates scheduled, have taken place in several locations; some have been
entirely outdoors, some have been combination outdoor hikes with yoga in a
rustic cabin. Happily, we've received enough positive feedback that we're
hoping to make these yoga classes a weekly occurrence at Spring Valley Nature
Center, Schaumburg, IL.

The January Sky Awaits!
Call me hopelessly optimistic, but as I prepare to batten down the fitness hatches and weather through what may as well be called my Winter Blues season, I am strangely looking forward to one redeeming element: the January sky. Okay, maybe it isn't the only redeeming aspect of the season--snowshoes, owl walks, and the pristine quality of a fresh snow are a few others that come to mind--but it is, I feel an oft overlooked thrill that no other time of the year can duplicate. To witness it, try to take a crisp outdoor walk about 30 minutes before sunset. If at all possible, hike a natural spot....a park, forest preserve, or nature center will do nicely. The more sky you can see, the better; I am particularly fond of finding frozen lakes and marshes, as they afford me a more open feeling. Provided that you've chosen a day that is mostly clear with perhaps a thin, wispy cloud layer, you should be in for a pleasing palette of icy sky hues. Dress warmly; you might even
want to bring a thermos of hot beverage, as it is best to allow at least 10-15 minutes of being quiet and still while taking in the majestic colors and textures. You won't be disappointed!
