(Return to
Mindfulness off the Mat list)
At first glance (or sound), there is much mystery surrounding the word, “Om.”
Interestingly, though, the fundamental use of it is really quite simple and
down-to-earth. “Om” is used commonly as a mantra—that is, a word or phrase
that is either recited vocally or visualized in sync with the breath. There
is really no hocus-pocus behind it; rather, it is used in much the same way
as a sigh….a way to release tension and relax almost instantly.
Philosophically, some yogis claim that “Om” is the collective sound of the
universe, somewhat like the muted murmur produced by a room full of people.
Apparently, we are hot-wired to respond to the vibration of our own voice;
it can be rather soothing, almost tranquilizing. This makes more sense when
you consider how soothing it can be to a child or infant to be held close to
its mother, as she softly sings to her. Now, like any yoga technique, some
will find the use of Om more helpful to their routine than others. To
experiment and see for yourself, try this: at a time you wish to de-stress,
find a quiet room, one where you can be secluded and private. Find a
comfortable seated position; remain in neutral posture. Take a few slow,
deep breaths to help encourage a release of tension from your neck and
shoulders. Then, take a long, deep breath in, and as you exhale, begin
verbalizing the sound “ah,” but lengthen it. Let this sound then blend into
“oh, ” again, dragging out the sound, then finish with a few seconds of “mmmmm.”
It will take a few such verbalizations to get used to it, but persist long
enough to give it an honest effort. Then, return to your “normal” relaxed
breathing. Practice this technique on several occasions, and see if it works
for you! Ő
