(Return to
Mindfulness off the Mat list)
When stress becomes overwhelming, one of my favorite self-nurturing
activities is what I call my “invisible” meditation. It allows me to retreat
to a quiet, safe place, where I can be calm and clear my head, even if I
know it will quickly refill upon returning to “civilization.” To do this,
seek out a natural place such as a park. Rather than a park bench, walk to a
place where you can better blend in with the scenery; a good example might
be underneath the protective umbrella of a wide, low-hanging tree. Have a
seat and do some abdominal and/or ujjayi breathing. Let your mind be still
as you take in the beauty of your surroundings. Allow your “blending in” to
represent a shelter from the day’s stresses. Let your gaze soften; your
muscles relax. Stay as long as you wish, though even just a few minutes of
this can go a long way! Ő
