The day saw an unpromising
start.....cold, wet, and gloomy. More than one of us,
I'm sure, felt uncertain that we'd even get the chance to attempt our Full
Moon Yoga, considering the looks of the weather. Yet the Weather
Channel insisted that we were in for clearing skies and unseasonably mild
temperatures before day's end, so I tried to ignore the visual signs and
remain optimistic. Our faith was rewarded! By 4:30pm, we'd
experienced a complete flip-flop.....60 degrees and sun illuminating the
autumnal trees. And while the sky would eventually haze over, leaving
only the occasional quick peak at the near-full moon (this was the Friday
nearest the full moon, remember), the warm temperatures prevailed, leaving
most of us gleefully overdressed for our outdoor excursion.
We pulled up at the nature center and
began setting up our yoga center....candles were lit, handouts were stacked,
apple cinnamon tea was percolated in a large, "bottomless" urn. A
campfire was begun--what would turn out to be the only source of light we
needed for our yoga, and luminaries were set along the main trail, greeting
participants as they arrived.
One by one, moonlight yogi's began to
appear out of the shadowed trail, ready to start the adventure. With
all participants arrived, we opened with our short hike on one of the
several woodland/prairie trails, omitting the use of flashlight to better
enable our eyes to adjust to the low dose of light fed by the slightly
obscured moon. Upon return to our lakeside "yoga nook," we glided near
effortlessly from posture to posture, feeding off my verbal cues more than
any visual images, and taking in the night's sounds as our musical
accompaniment. Layers, originally donned to fend off the anticipated
late October chill, were removed to reveal outfits more typical of an early
September camp outing. We wrapped up our yoga with a soothing final
relaxation on our backs, allowing several minutes to lapse in total,
welcome, silence. Following our end-of-session moon/nature quote, the
group migrated to the nearby "tea table," where cupfuls of steaming apple
cinnamon were refilled over the sound of happy, if rather relaxed, chatter.
We finally parted company, retreating into the night fully gratified and
satiated. You can bet we'll be doing more of these upon the return of
yoga-friendly weather in spring! -ep
